A group of great blue herons (I think that’s what they are) nest in the top of the trees beside a river in Rice County, Kansas. Overcast skies and late afternoon light turned this into a silhouette. The big birds were watching me. I found that if I slowly raised my arms they would turn their heads to the side, probably better to focus on the potentially troublesome human. That also gave a better view of their shapes. I didn’t want to “spook” them, but a moment after this, most of them also took to flight. This is the first time I’ve witnessed a group of roosting herons.
